Hearthstone Shawl

Hearthstone is an asymmetrical triangular shawl knit on the bias. It features a richly textured body and an intricate cable that runs along the bottom edge. The shawl begins with a provisional i-cord cast-on, from which extra stitches are picked up to form the shawl body. Once the cable is established, increases are made along one edge until desired size is achieved.

I’m in the process of adding a few of my older designs that were published before I started this website. You can get 25% off the Hearthstone pattern by entering code Hearthstone at checkout on both Payhip and Ravelry. Valid through 12:59pm ET on Tuesday, November 1st.

Note: The button below links directly to the Ravelry.com pattern page.

Pattern includes fully written instructions, charted instructions, and two low vision versions.

Do you love big shawls but hate long purl rows? Although there are a few purl stitches in the cable panel and along the very edges, the slipped stitch pattern (where most of the increases occur) doesn’t have a single purl stitch!

Sizes
Length across neck: 52 (64, 76, 88) in. / 132 (162, 194, 224) cm
Depth at deepest point: 18 (22, 26, 30) in. / 46 (56, 66, 76) cm

Yarn
690 (940, 1205, 1510) yards / 630 (860, 1102, 1380) meters of fingering weight yarn

Sample was made using 1205 yd (1102 m) of Serendipitous Wool Atma (100% Superwash Merino) in colorway Gray Whale.

For substitutions, choose a yarn with good stitch definition and drape. A solid, semi-solid, tonal, or lightly speckled colorway is recommended; too much variegation may obscure the cable details.

Since gauge is not critical, Hearthstone can be made with any weight yarn – just be sure to account for differences in required yardage. Several testers used heavier weight yarns, including sport and DK weight.

Needles
US 5 (3.75mm) needles
Or, size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge
28 sts and 32 rows = 4 in. / 10cm in slipped stitch pattern (blocked)
The slipped stitch pattern for gauge can be found on pg. 2 of the pattern

Gauge is not critical, but be aware that your gauge will affect the final dimensions of your shawl. Swatching is still recommended if only to ensure that you are happy with the fabric you’re creating, especially if you choose a different yarn weight.

Notions
Tapestry needle to weave in ends
1 cable needle
2 stitch markers
Waste yarn and crochet hook for provisional cast on

Difficulty:
Test knitters rated this as intermediate. It is recommended for knitters who are comfortable reading their own knitting and who have at least a little familiarity with cables.

Designing knitting patterns is a tangible way to express myself. Each pattern is a reflection of part of my soul and contains bits of my joy, sadness, fears, and hopes. My heart belongs on the shores of Lake Superior and most of my pattern designs are inspired by life "Up North."
